In November, 2012, Mr. Li started a badminton club in the Chinese community here in London (London Chinese Association, for further details, see www.londonchinese.ca). The purpose of this badminton club is to help people to build and maintain good physical fitness, to gain multiple health and social benefits and promotes longevity. As we know, badminton is a great aerobic exercise, a fun sport, and means of bettering our physical fitness. Badminton can help promote any level physical fitness and is one of the few sports where people of all ages, men and women alike, can play together. The health benefits of playing badminton regularly includes, but not limited to, the following: · Reduction of bad cholesterol and increase of good cholesterol · Protection from heart disease, especially heart attacks · Control of blood pressure and body weight · Prevention of osteoporosis to strengthen bones · Reduction of incidences of cancer (e.g. breast cancer, large bowel cancer) · Increase of energy for life, work and/study Playing badminton also helps to promote social networking. As of now, the club has up to 60 members. They come from different parts of the world as well as walks of life, and from diverse language and cultural backgrounds. The badminton club welcomes every one, no matter where the person comes from. This is also a place for people to socialize and network with one another. In particular, new comers can benefit from assistance “old Londoners” in their adjustment to the new environment in one way or another. I have been with the badminton club since last November. I really love it. I am very much interested in it because of numerous benefits as mentioned above. In addition, it is a good way for me to enjoy badminton without having to be committed to a gym membership or to find a court and players. Hence, I would like to take this opportunity to express sincere gratefulness to Li and his team, who are doing their best for the club. Among other things, he has found an expert to coach (Mr. Wang) us how to do warm-up, and how to play. The coach is very nice, professional and helpful. The players are also on very good terms. They enjoy chatting during the waiting/break time as much as playing in the court. By the way, Mr. Li and his co-workers, Mr. Mo and Mr. Wang (coach), are looking for a bigger court for the club. Hopefully, we will hear the good news very soon. Speaking through my experience, paying badminton regularly has many benefits. It is not only good to enhance our physical fitness and health, but also helpful to enrich our social life and expand our social network. I hope to see a fast and healthy growth of this club with joint efforts from as many people as possible. |
