, d% _9 A8 I: O1 H* q0 CForget planes, trains and automobiles — they’re biking it on a four-seater. Sean, daughter Sherry, and wife Emily Jiang left London May 17 for Vancouver.

The Free Press caught up with Sherry Ma in Saskatchewan, nearly 60 days into the trip:

Q: Why travel across Canada?
8 S( t6 N- l* p U7 z; B( a! W ^
# _& E7 `) \% \3 C, ^ \Before we immigrated to Canada, every year we travelled in a different Chinese province for our vacation . . . all by traditional transportation. However, people are all moving so fast in the modern era — maybe . . . it is a good idea to slow down a bit.; K- w: y% K3 [ [
7 p7 Z* I' s& \% @2 k' G
Q: Why did you choose to bike?
. z& U1 w+ M, t9 B' K2 e# w
9 J1 T& D7 U |$ KThe Trans-Canada Highway has attracted bikers from all over the world. We are just one of the many. On the way, we’ve met bikers from France, Switzerland, America, and Korea. Biking is a great way to actually feel the places along the way. It is slow enough to see things that we might miss in a speedy car.
' Y8 f+ D/ K1 j) S e" M, f+ G3 `( M* q& w: z( O
Q: How has the bike ride been?
* ?. z1 ]7 `' L2 W2 P7 M% I A) e3 p6 t) \4 `1 ] x
It’s tiring and fun. Sometimes when the hills are too high we have to walk up. Sometimes we have to ride in really bad weather . . . But no pain, no gain. Without the bitter obstacles, how would we know that success is such a sweet thing? Everyday when we arrive at our destination of the day we feel accomplished and that will boost our confidence to continue the journey for the next day.+ o+ Y5 i( r# _: H, E

Q: Where has your journey taken you?7 u' @! H, ]9 b1 }5 L0 w, t
0 I0 O, G, j4 q6 n2 [
We stopped at big cities such as Sault Ste Marie, Thunder Bay, Winnipeg and small towns such as Tobermory, Rossport, Vermilion Bay, Upsala and Indian Head. We tend to make plans just a few days ahead . . .2 D& s m+ v* i! y a) x g
% D2 _, A. a6 \6 X, O" c. V) Y
Q: What was your favourite place and why?
+ {' D# O# d' b G/ [. b/ A& k- N8 t
We will never forget the ride along Lake Superior. The hills were up and down like non-stop, and our heartbeats experienced ups and downs with the hills. The blue water connects to the sky and the lake is so huge, it looks like an ocean.
! u7 K$ B' y. }, t% m2 m) [5 O4 P5 j- ~( P# [
Q: What have you learned about Canada on your journey?
7 o5 O0 ?2 P* Y4 x0 u4 H
! Y; }* S' [6 i3 }7 K: t0 eCanada is a multicultural and peaceful country. People come to help us when we are in difficult situations. When we were back in Tobermory, our chains were making random noises. My dad was checking and repairing, and a grandpa came to ask him if he needed any help. The grandpa told him the kinds of repair tools we would need and where to purchase them. He then left the motel with his wife. However, a few minutes later, he came back with a new set of tools. He went to buy them for us and gave them to us for free. Although it was just a small set of tools, we felt so heart-warmed.9 t3 `; w- T$ D
! _7 e8 y8 x6 Z5 B& K
Q: Have you had any cultural experiences on your trip?: \2 |4 Y4 O5 S4 H: D: f
* H6 n2 P! M; x8 ^We did happen to join a (First Nation pow wow) when we were riding towards Upsala (a small town north of Thunder Bay). Not only did they put a special song on for us to keep us blessed for the journey, but they also organized a small fundraising for us.* x( v( q+ U+ D- ?) }& O# B
5 D/ S J; |0 P" H* g8 V cQ: What are you hoping to gain from the experience?$ }. `( ?. Y4 q* h# Y
4 A' k- j5 ]! O, S
Many people think that it’s crazy long and slow, but three months are such a tiny part of our whole life. The precious experiences and broadened world view we gained from the trip are worth all the hard pedalling on the highway. Not only is this a journey, but it’s also a life lesson that teaches us how to be patient, persistent, and optimistic through both good and bad times.

Seeing our friends and neighbours in London. Their support was the reason that we could leave without worrying about things at home.
